Orange peel can usually be corrected by controlled wet sanding and machine polishing, but severe texture may require the panel to be sanded and clear-coated again. A body shop’s charge in Malaysia will depend on the affected area, clear-coat thickness, panel shape, paint condition and whether refinishing is necessary. A lightly textured bonnet may only need paint correction, while extensive orange peel across a saloon, SUV or van can involve several panels and considerably more labour. The workshop should inspect the finish before quoting because polishing cannot safely remove texture if the remaining clear coat is too thin.
How a workshop chooses the correct repair
Orange peel is a visible symptom rather than proof that a particular product caused the defect. Possible factors include unsuitable spray-gun settings, incorrect viscosity, poor atomisation, insufficient flow or thinner that evaporated too quickly for the spraying conditions. A compatible slow reducer such as 2K Slow Thinner T28 may improve levelling when used with the specified 2K Auto Clear, particularly on large panels in warm conditions, but the manufacturer’s mixing ratio must be followed. Before sanding, a professional may assess film thickness and check for dry spray, runs or weak adhesion. If the coating is sound and sufficiently thick, fine wet sanding followed by staged polishing may restore a flatter gloss. If the texture extends deeply into the finish or the clear coat is defective, respraying is generally the safer repair.
